5 Hard Truths About Dating Apps

They take too much time.

The volume needed these days to find someone attractive is insane. The gold rush era on apps was 2015–2017, where you would swipe on 1 out of every 10. But all these years, the novelty effect has worn off, people got burned, ghosted, or lied too and the good ones have left the building. Now I’d estimate it’s 1 out of 100.

There is nothing in this world more precious than time. And the hours you spend swiping left could be be used to hang out with people that know and care about you, instead of asking some stranger “so what do you like to do for fun?”

Most use it out of boredom, not dating.

These apps are designed to keep you hooked, the interface is reminiscent of a slot machine. I’ve heard of stats that 1 in 500 matches lead to a phone number. You need some entertainment or validation? No problem. Download a dating app.

Attractive partners have 9999+ matches.

Her inbox is always full. Not only is she on a dating app, but she probably has Snapchat and Instagram too. The odds of you getting her attention and cutting through the noise get slimmer and slimmer by the day. You’re getting lost in a sea of “hey what’s up?’.

You won’t get a true read for someone via text.

You’ll know chemistry when your eyes meet. It’s hard to get a read on somone via a message. Body language and micro expressions are important. I’ve been in situations where the girl is amazing and engaging over text only to fall flat and be awkward in person. Texting isn’t communication, it’s a performance.

You will meet someone better in life.

This is harder and not as common anymore but it’s worth it. Up your social life. Put yourself out there. I think true success in dating will come organically. You probably know someone who met their girlfriend or wife even on Tinder but I think those days are over.

I have the most insane story about a girl I dated for a few months I met on Hinge. I’ll talk about it someday, but it changed my outlook. When it comes to dating, there’s usually a catch. When it comes to dating apps, there’s always a catch.
